Karou groaned and looked at Daichi, “Is it just me or have we been on shift longer than usual.''Her frown deepened when he didn’t answer her, his stone like face staring straight forward with no indication that he had even heard her speak. “Oh come on Daichi you know you are allow to talk when we are on watch duty.” Daichis eyes slowly moved over to look at Karou. “ I am aware that I am allowed to talk to you while on guard, however I do not wish to speak to you. Our job is to be vigilant and ready for anything. Talking to one another will only distract us from that task.” He then simply looked back out into the field and the forest beyond it. Karou rolled her eyes and narrowed her eyes at him “ you know you don’t have to be so rude all the time. Most of the time other Viscets are just trying to have a friendly conversation with you. The least you can do is act friendly back. “ Karou went quiet, her eyes scanning the edge of the woods and down the path that led away from the palace. Daichi did not turn back to look at her, his focus was still ahead of him to the work beyond. However one of his ears twitched as he heard footsteps approaching from behind them. “ It appears that our replacements are here to relieve us now. You can now stop complaining about them being late”. With that Daichi turned and left his post. Karou stared at him in disbelief. She muttered under her breath “ why must you be such a pain to deal with”. She nodded at the two replacements and followed behind Daichi to the dinner hall to get some food before bed.
At the hall she grabbed her food and quickly made her way far away from Daichi and spotted her friend Kumari. Karou made a bee line to her and plopped down onto the bench with a large sigh. Kumari looked at her confused and a bit concerned “ are you okay Karou?” Karou looked over her shoulder at Daichi and then back at Kumari “ I just did a full day shift with mr. personality over there. I can not stand being stuck with him all day, it’s like trying to be friends with a rock.” Karou huffed and shoveled food into her mouth. Kumari shook her head “ he’s a good male Karou, just because you do not understand his background does not mean he’s like a rock, it just means he’s had a different life than you and a different personality.” Karou stared at Kumari for a second and slowly turned to look at Daichi quietly eating his dinner alone on the other side of the hall. “ What do you mean he had a different life? I don’t understand?”
Kumari sighed “I do not know how much of his story he wants to be out there but I will tell you the basics of what I know.” Kumari settled in and her voice softened preparing to tell the story of a young viscet that had gone through a tough life. “ Once there was a family that was not powerful but not poor either. They were great craftsmen but never had the eye of the royals on them until one day they were requested to help decorate the new ornate warriors quarters. They were happy to help, but first they needed supplies and lots of them, so the small family left with a small group of Viscets to get materials to build what was asked of them. However they had gone to the kingdom Tenebrous. As you obviously know, being one of our kingdom's warriors, this kingdom's new ruler Echeveria is feared by many for his ruthlessness. Well his cruelty found this family. Unspeakable things happened to the group of Viscets. Daichi was one of the only survivors, he was taken and trained to be a mercenary for the kingdom. They used him to dispose of his high ranked Viscets that the current ruler thought would serve him no purpose since they were loyal to his dead father that he had killed. After some time however Echeveria started to distrust Daichi and had him tortured and dumped just before the kingdom's borders. It is unknown how long he had laid there, only that he was barely alive and brought to me to be healed as know one else had the skill to do so. He still bares the scars from his time in that place but I think they are deeper than his physical wounds.” Kumari looked at Daichi sitting on his own and sighed sadly “ now do you understand what I mean. He must always be on guard because for him it is a life or death matter. He does not trust easily and most likely never will, he will never act the way you or I would but he tries to fit in as best as he can.”
Karou looked at Kumari and nodded, she picked up her food and quietly walked over to Daichi and sat down. She looked at him and nodded then simply started to eat, not forcing the male to speak but simply enjoying each other's company, to where maybe one day he will be able to let his guard down with her and she may see who he truly is as a viscet, beneath all of the scars.
